Running for over 50 years strong, the Eastern Music Festival is Greensboro's premier summer event. Thrown by the eponymous company Eastern Music Festival, a wide range of acts perform for the festival. Over 100 music events take place during late summer months, with blues, jazz, acoustic and rock 'n' roll music being the main attractions. There is also a great focus on education here. Tons of school bands and youth orchestras play their role in the music festival.

Numerous events take place during the festival, from orchestras to music competitions for youngsters. A few big-name acts have appeared at festivals in the past, like Jason Vieaux on guitar and world famous composer Julia Adolphe.

Music Events

One of the main events at Eastern Music Festival is their Young Artists series. Take a group of school-aged composers and put them on stage with professional conductors and composers and you have yourself a marvelous youth orchestra show. There are also other events for EMF's Young Artists. The Young Artists Piano Recital is perfect for a relaxing night with some wine, while the Young Artists Band performance is great when you're planning for a livelier night. The events are scheduled for different nights throughout the festival, so be sure to grab yourself a copy of the calendar of events.

Towards the end of the festival is when the guest acts perform. This time, usually around early August, is when the most fun happens. With various music acts from rock 'n' roll to classical music, there's enough here for any music lover. While the names aren't the most famous around, they are huge acts in their respective fields, so don't miss out on a chance to see them live.

Educational Events

There also also numerous educational events at the Eastern Music Festival, making this a perfect night for the whole family. Musically Speaking, a seminar-like event, is a great way to inform yourself on the year's performers and the event's history. You can also schedule hands-on events during the festival. Reserve a seat at the piano program, the conducting program or the classical guitarist lessons and let your children walk away from the festival having learned something new. For another family-friendly activity, be sure you make it in time for Family Nights every Thursday and Friday.

Since the festivals take place all across Greensboro, this is a perfect opportunity to taste the culinary excellence of the city. While the festival has their own dining events like a mini international foods festival, you're much better off synchronizing your festival stops with great restaurants along the way. When you're Downtown catching a music show, be sure to try out the Green Valley Grill for a quick meal or M'Coul's Public House for a few drinks.

Don't make the mistake of driving yourself throughout the festival. Since this is the biggest annual event in Greensboro, parking and traffic can be horrendous.
