A Little History

Let's face it, most people love a spectacle and this event could certainly be called that. But it all had to start somewhere. And that somewhere was back in the 1970s when many of the unique buildings in the area had reached a great state of disrepair and actually were in danger of either being razed or of just plain falling down. At that point, some very thoughtful and caring people in the area started a preservation league. In what makes a super success story, it was actually the preservation of the Art Deco architecture in South Beach that was the key to the city's resurgence. And today, the city of Miami is once again a very desirable resort destination.

The Art Deco Weekend is an appreciation of the uniqueness of the Art Deco movement and what it has meant and still means to the Miami area. Also known as Streamline Moderne, Art Deco style is characterized by symmetry, floral and aquatic embellishments and nautical design. The weekend raises a lot of money for continued preservation and thanks to all of the hard work over the past few decades, visitors and locals alike can enjoy streets like Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue which are show places for neon and pastel historic structures. And one more historical fact that you might not have known, South Beach actually has the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the United States.

Enjoying the Festivities

The organizers make it easy for you to get around during the festival as they close Ocean Drive to traffic. This makes it easy for visitors to walk past vendors of unique antiques, art pieces, photography, vintage clothing and don't worry, there will be plenty of great grub to grab. Get ready for a lecture serious that explains a lot more about the Art Deco movement. But if you don't want to learn and you are just coming for fun, there will be plenty for you to experience as well. You are going to have an absolute blast listening to live music on the beach or watching films of a bygone era like The Great Gatsby and Annie. There is even a fashion show features Art Deco clothing.

But one of the highlights for most of the festival goers is the walking tours. One of the best ways to experience the phenomenal Art Deco designed buildings is to walk along with a guide and visit the various hotels and other structures. These tours are led by local architects, historians and preservationists so you can trust the source. They even provide tours by specific themes if that interests you. For instance, organized crime, Lincoln Road, Jewish Miami, neon lights, Espanola Way are just a few of the themes to pick from. In addition, people watching is another great activity at the festival because you are going to see a little but of everything. We promise you that the event is going to be a highlight of your year.

Of course one of the things that you need to seriously consider is how you are going to get to and from the festival. There are any number of ways you could go. You could drive yourself. But let's face it, that is not going to be too much fun. Think about it, everyone else is going to be headed in the same direction as you and you will have to fight traffic every minute. Then there is the issue of finding a decent parking spot. It is going to be a madhouse around the festival so hunting for a parking place could certainly be an issue. Then there is always the issue of having a few libations while you are walking around enjoying yourself. Do you really want to get back in your vehicle and try and drive home?
