You may or may not know this fact but more than 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Anne W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin. We know, phenomenal right. In fact, it is the largest urban bat colony in North America. The bridge is a huge draw for tourists and Austinites alike around dusk to watch the nightly flights. But what is even more exciting is the fact that an entire festival has grown up around the fact that Austin's identity is in some ways connected to these bats. BatFest draws an average of 15,000 attendees and there is truly something for everyone. So plan on coming to the festival for some good old bat fun.
The Highlights
Of course, everyone is here to see and learn about the bats. But in addition, there are all kinds of activities that are featured. For instance, three live music stages are setup with some of the best area bands performing on a regular basis. Over 75 arts and crafts vendors provide their wares for your perusal and potential purchase. And never fear, some great food and drinks are always on hand to give you energy to continue your festival going ways. Did we mention the costume contest? The kids especially like this one, but it for everyone so make sure you come dressed in your best bat paraphernalia.
Something you will be happy to note is the fact that BatFest brings in over $4 million dollars to the local economy and a portion of that money is donated to bat conservation efforts. In fact Bat Conservation has a booth on the bridge where you can learn about all of the positive aspects related to bats and where you can also learn more about how to help the preservation efforts if you are so inclined. Most people don't realize that the bat population can help reduce crop damage greatly by keeping the population of crop eating moths down. One of the highlights of BatFest comes around 7:30 p.m. when everyone gathers around the bridge and watches thousands of pats flight into the night sky. It is truly an awe inspiring sight and something that you do not want to miss.
